In today’s Gospel, we see the blessing for Peter, James, and John to witness Jesus transfigured. The Transfiguration is a preview of the glory we all hope to share in Heaven. Jesus wanted to show His apostles the glory of His Resurrection ahead of time. Having had this experience, they would keep these words to undergo the trial of the Cross and the Passion of their Master.
The word transfiguration means a change in form or appearance. Biologists call it metamorphosis (derived from the Greek word metamorphoomai), which is used in the Gospel. An example of this phenomenon is the change that occurs when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. As children, we might have curiously watched the caterpillar turning into a chrysalis and then bursting into a beautiful monarch butterfly.
The story of the transfiguration of Jesus is also for us. Jesus invites us to join Him and be transformed. He loves us so much that He won’t let us stay where we are. Life is a spiritual journey. He wants us to grow and live our lives to the fullest. God wants us to change and embark on new beginnings.
We need to embrace “mountain-top experiences” in our lives. That mountaintop experience is CHANGE. We share the mountain-top experience of Peter, James, and John when we accept the invitation to witness Jesus’ miracles unfold in our lives. Remember that we may not rise to joy until we first suffer pain and uncertainties. We may not enter glory before we experience the truth of the Crucifixion.
Change is not always pleasant. They could be challenging and heartbreaking as well. For instance, our children grow up. They go to college. They get married. They leave our homes. We cannot tell them to stay in the same stage of life. But we must embrace change with faith and courage, knowing God is always present and accompanies us.
We gather today to reflect on the call to live lives that are not merely comfortable but vibrant and meaningful. Yes, we want to stay in our comfort zones, where we feel safe, secure, and familiar. But remember also that the most profound growth, transformation, and encounter with God lie beyond those familiar boundaries. Our comfort zones, while providing a sense of security, can also become prisons. They may limit our potential and prevent us from pursuing God’s plan.
Change is like an adventure that brings excitement to our life journey. Take risks to embrace the change, as it brings beautiful and meaningful experiences. Change allows us to look closer at ourselves and grow more appreciative of what we have. It also allows us to have a different perspective of the world. It helps us become more patient and understanding of the plight and situation of others.
Let us embrace change not as a burden but as a gift. It is a divine invitation to grow closer to God and live a beautiful life of purpose and meaning. Like the mountaintop experience of Peter, James, and John, let us observe how God works in our lives. He does so wonderfully through every change that comes our way.
