Tips on How to Get Ready for the First Day of School

by Mae Gonzales Ruark

It’s hard to believe how time flies, and the summer break is soon ready to end!

A certain degree of apprehension and excitement may accompany back-to-school. Kids often feel anxious about returning to a regimented group environment after being away for months. While some kids might enthusiastically embrace the shift, others might need more encouragement to get used to it.

The following recommendations will ease the transition for your child and family into the upcoming school year and offer your child a perception of the positive aspects of learning. You may get the most out of your first day of class by following these instructions and getting off to a good start in the new school year:

Set goals for the school year. Take some time to sit down with your child and talk to them about what they want to achieve during the school year. Setting both academic and personal goals will help motivate and offer your child something to focus on.

Talk to your child. Listen to their feelings and concerns about their classmates, friends, teachers, and new activities. Ask them what they are looking forward to, what they are interested to learn to accomplish, and any concerns they might have, like classroom bullying and other issues. It is essential to reassure your child that they are in a safe environment, including support from teachers and school administration.

Take the time to prepare.  Familiarize your child with the classrooms, restrooms, cafeteria, and main office, especially if your child attends a new school. If possible, visit the school in advance.

Help your child organize. Gather the necessary school supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, binders, and textbooks. Make sure they’re in good condition and ready to go. If you have a locker assigned, organize it with the necessary materials.

Plan for your child’s attire on the first day of school. Though it’s important to reflect your child’s style, make sure it’s comfortable and follows the school’s dress code.

Get adequate rest and nutrition. Being well-rested will help your child concentrate and stay engaged throughout the day.  Prepare a healthy and energizing breakfast, which fuels the body and mind for the day ahead.

Leave home with enough time to get to school early. Arriving early will allow your child to settle in, find the classroom, and possibly meet new classmates before the day begins.

Relax and stay positive. Remember that everyone is likely feeling excited and nervous at the same time on the first day of school. Stay positive and remind your child that it’s an opportunity to meet new children, learn new things, and have a fresh start.

May the coming school year be filled with excitement and new learning opportunities!

  1. I tutor at one of the local public schools. Although different prep for tutoring, these are good tips for relaxing the new students. One-on-one is quite different than the classroom.
