Meteora is one of Greece’s most extraordinary landscapes. It is a collection of enormous, steep sandstone rock pillars rising dramatically from the plains of central Greece. What makes it especially remarkable is that Orthodox monasteries were built atop these seemingly inaccessible rocks centuries ago. The monasteries appear to cling to the cliffs, surrounded by enormous drops and spectacular mountain scenery.

The word Meteora comes from a Greek word meaning “suspended in the air,” a fitting description because the monasteries seem to float above the landscape. Today, you can visit the monasteries by climbing stairs carved into the rocks, and the views from the top are breathtaking.

Meteora is both a natural wonder and an important spiritual and historical site.
